Extended Intermedia Work


Below is a partial compilation of my extended intermedia work.


1.

Galton’s Board – new musical instrument, inspired by the infamous eugenicist and statistician Sir Francis Galton’s device for teaching the normal distribution; uses the interaction of marbles and pegs to trigger and sample sounds via piezo disks; tilt sensors and capacitive keys allow for further control of the sound

MicroHarmonium – physical interface for exploring up to 48 divisions of the octave; carved, printed linoleum on Sensel with accompanying Eurorack module for outputting duophonic pitch-CV

ALLOPHONE – multifaceted standalone instrument and spectral processor; acts as its own resonator and amplifier; luthier techniques, spruce top, heat-molded rosewood sides; 6 different sizes of piezo disks, 12 total, half as transmitters, half as receivers; 6 bucket-brigade delay lines, 6 dual-pole filters

Möbius Plate Reverb – Möbius strip shaped copper reverb with four contact mics; used in conjunction with Möbius tape loop project

Andata (Reinterpretation) -  Ryuichi Sakamot’s “Andata” reinterpreted for classical guitar and my own assortment of electronics; recorded in three locations: (1) panned hard left is by a creek after a storm, (2) down the center is home, and (3) hard right is in my family's machine shop with the machines running; in the second half, the organ sound is me playing my classical guitar through a patch on the Electro-Harmonix Superego+ pedal

The New World (Redux) – a recontextualization of the first 5 minutes of Terrence Malick’s film, The New World; new score and sound design using primarily natural materials & phenomena & eschewing traditional instruments; voiceover replaced with historic audio of indigenous activist Vine Deloria Jr. reading Powhattan’s 1609 speech to John Smith
